早在几千年前，埃及人用芦苇编织成篮子，再将石头放入其中，一起埋入尼罗河中，用来抵御河水的侵蚀。而后欧洲人用装满石子的柳条篮来做军事防御工事和抵御洪水的材料,Galvanized Iron Wire Coated Wire。这时这些篮子从意大利语“Gabbione”获得“Large Cage”（大笼子）的名字。十九世纪中叶，第一批商业石笼编织网出现了。二十世纪中叶，格宾网又经历了一次改革,Fence Post Binding wire,军事哨岗，石笼焊接工艺面世。
